    Larry Tudor

    A Classic

    https://www.cloudbasemayhem.com/episode-29-larry-tudor-from-scary-origins-to-radical-records

Larry Tudor was known as the “Dark Prince” back in the day.  We roll the clock way back to 1973 when Larry learned how to fly his first hang glider in the seated position (yep, pre-prone days) on a wing that got a worse glide ratio than today’s smallest speed wings.

The stories in this episode are going to make your head spin.  Remember when hangies flew the Owens every day in the summer?  Guys tumbling out of the sky and not using reserves?  Flying without instruments?  Larry was the first person to fly over 200 miles (in 1983!) and was the first person to fly over 300 miles in 1990.  His 308 mile record from Hobbs, New Mexico in 1994 wasn’t beaten for a decade.

In the mid 80’s Larry was widely regarded as one of the best hang gliders in the world and this conversation covers a lot of awesome ground.  Scary close calls, whorehouses, guns, cowboys, flying in tornados, trouble with the police, flying with air force bombers and early towing nightmares- this podcast is a glimpse into a crazy world of the pioneers who laid the ground in free flight.

Larry left hang gliding in 1999 but has recently discovered paragliding with his daughter, making his career span over 40 years.  Strap yourself in and prepare to smile and laugh, we had a lot of fun with this one.

    The CIVL Bureau Decisions

These that need to be approved

    https://www.fai.org/page/civl-meetings - Annex 7

Allowed a Cat 2 event to be postponed in Venezuela due to the political situation in this country.

Deep concern on the actions of Mexican NAC that install financial conditions to organise PG/HG Cat 2 events.  Competition organisers requested the support of FAI. Decided to rank Mexican events even without NAC sanction and no publication on the FAI Calendar.

Allowed events in Italy to be sanctioned and ranked while the NAC is non-operative due to political issues.

Allowed events in Mexico to be ranked while the NAC is suspended for non-payment of its FAI subscription.

Allowed the organisers of the test event for the 2020 Asian-Oceanic Paragliding championships to modify the dates if necessary in consideration of the climatic conditions (fires).

Authorised a report of a Cat 2 event in Ecuador due to the political situation.

Category 1 Sanctioning Fee Going Up

    Fri, Jan 31 2020, 7:21:50 am EST

Category 1 Sanctioning Fee Going Up

    Doesn't pay the CIVL expenses

    https://www.fai.org/page/civl-meetings - Annex 23B

The Cat 1 sanction fees that organisers pay to CIVL do not cover the expenses that occur to CIVL (medals, steward training and stipends, Live-trackers manager’s stipends, expected Jurors’ stipends…).

There are no financial differences between World and Continental Championships and the difference in sanction fee ceilings, and the idea itself of a ceiling, seems unjustified.

Cat 1 sanction fees have stayed at the same level since 2004.  It is time to adjust them to the reality of the cost of living.

Hence, the Bureau proposes to the Plenary that:

    • There is no more ceiling for Cat 1 events (currently €3,200 for Continental and €5,100 for World)

    • The fee per pilot per competition day is €4.50 instead of the current €3.20.  This is under the 2004–2019 inflation rate.

    Reflective Leading Edges

    https://www.fai.org/page/civl-meetings - Annex 24A

In Class 1, 5 and Sport, to improve visibility, all competitor gliders must display either very visible leading edges or a high contrast nose cone.  Most visible colors are day-glow yellow, orange and green.

Do not believe what's on their sanctioning web page

As not all National Aerolubs are properly connected, I want the organizers to contact me first to coach them through the process.  Leaving them on their own now may end up with some applications not sanctioned.
